Lazy, Lazy Editors Who Don't Help Their Writers

stephanie's picture

An observation I have from applying to a few online writing jobs recently: Some editors don't want to do their job. They give you vague directions on what to provide them, and then rather than working with you to give them what they want, they just shoot you down if you didn't read their minds.

I know I can put half a sentence together. I also know that I do better with a good editor. But lately, I find that a lot of editors don't want to nurture the writer. They don't know how to say to a writer, "Could you tighten this up here a little bit?"

Instead, they just expect you to plop out picture perfect writing right out of the box. If you don't perform exactly on cue, they'll continue to search for those few mythological writers who apparently separated from the editor at birth and can thus read the editor's mind.

Writing on My BlackBerry

stephanie's picture

I got a BlackBerry Curve for Christmas and I've done a little bit of writing on it. It's a bit slow but it's nice to have a small little typewriter for those times I am out and about and have an idea I want to jot down.

The Curve comes with a Memo Pad that you can use, and then you can email yourself the contents when done. You can also get Microsoft Word for your BlackBerry, but that costs extra.

There is also a Voice Memo capability, so you can record your thoughts into the BlackBerry. I have yet to use this. I am planning on getting more storage space for the BlackBerry (you can add up to 16 gigs with a Micro SD card) and when I do, I plan on using the Voice Memo a lot more. Great for being in the car and recording your thoughts when you drive!

Couple Karma

A man goes to a brothel; there he finds his wife is working there. They are now divorcing, though you'd think they'd be perfect for each other!

Jennifer Love Hewitt Drives Traffic

Well, it's a bit sad that you have to write about a celebrity to get some traffic, but I thought I would share. I blogged about Jennifer Love Hewitt and the whole uproar over her tiny bit of cellulite and my traffic tripled in a day. All from Jennifer Love Hewitt searches.

Sigh.

Here is a very informative video from screenwriter (FIELD OF DREAMS, SNEAKERS) and WGAw board member Phil Alden Robinson. He relates the key turning points in the battle for the rights of working screenwriters as technology has advanced.

Feedback Requested: Writing a Column

stephanie's picture

I have decided to write a "column" of sorts and publish it on sites like this one to promote my website at:

http://www.feelgoodgirl.com

I am in holistic healing, well-being, spirituality, etc. I am trying to find the right tone that brings out the best side of my personality...and also so the column isn't too boring and generic.

I'm trying to come up with a general theme and title...something along the lines of spirituality, positive energy, healing, alternative health, etc.

Comments and feedback appreciated.

WRITER'S WARNING: Do NOT Apply at About.com!

stephanie's picture

In May, I applied for an open topic at About.com, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. No response. At the beginning of August, they sent me a username and password with no instructions.

It turns out they put me into their two-week training program but neglected to give me a heads up, ask me if this was a good time, or even give me the damn instructions.

I busted my ass at the last minute for two weeks. They give you very narrow deadlines. You have to put up tons of content and links. Their back-end is horrible - it is a mish-mash of old and new systems. They do not have a graphical editor to use. They don't have any training calls. They just hand you a link to a bunch of dense documentation and you are on your own.

My "prep editor" barely responded to my emails. I got no help from her.
